Why Demon’s New 4th Edition is a Big Deal to Me

I wrote the first pages of what would become Demon: A Memoir around 1999. I didn’t mean to write a new novel; I had another book in the works that I’d been working on for years and that was the one that was going to get finished and out to a publisher first, by golly.

The day the idea for Demon came to me, I jotted down some notes so I wouldn’t forget this fallen angel story idea and then went back to work on the book I’d been working on for years. That night, my computer fried. Something literally burned out on the motherboard. I got out a notebook and started writing more ideas about this fallen angel story. I wrote 40 pages by hand. I finished the book in six weeks. And I thought, “Okay, maybe this one needs to go first.” I rewrote it a few times, spiffed it up, and send it out via snail mail—because that’s how it was still done back then.

It did become my first published novel but it took six years to sell. In 2006, I signed a three book deal, rewrote the book for a final time (did you know the main character, Clay, didn’t exist in the first version?). Demon: A Memoir released the following year.

Through the years, Demon would have three publishers—four, if you count the audiobook version. Eventually I reacquired the rights. This happened two years ago. (The book has technically been out of print for two years!) But I’ve had other books to work on and promote and tour for so it’s taken me this long to finally get it back on the market—this time under my own imprint, Quelle.  During that time, I’ve fielded a lot of questions about where to find the book, why it wasn’t in ebook, why it’s so hard to find. The answer is that for the last two years the only print editions have been out-of-print first and second editions, many of them only available as used books or for high prices on eBay.

So I’m really, really excited to get this book—my first published, the one that officially started my career—out in an all-new updated edition with a gorgeous new cover to boot. AND it’s got something Demon has never had before: a hardcover edition. Some of you have asked for this hardcover version for years (and for Havah: The Story of Eve, which will also be out in hardcover, paperback, and eBook next month and is available, like Demon, in audiobook now). I heard you, I listened. It just took me getting the rights back and some time to get my ducks in a row, but it’ll be available July 9. And isn’t it a beaut?

For me as a traditionally published author, it’s also exciting to have these rights under my own roof. They’ve lived in a lot of houses through the years; it’s time they lived in mine.

Please be sure to check out the new version online, grab a copy for yourself or a friend (I’ll gladly sign and personalize them—and any other of my books we have in stock—on my website at https://toscalee.com/product/demon/, where you can buy the book from other vendors and in eBook as well) and then keep an eye out for Havah: The Story of Eve, coming August 13!*

August 13 is Farmer Bryan’s birthday *and* the twins’ birthday, too!
