Who Are You Really?

The Progeny is out today! What a journey this has been. I started research for this book and its sequel almost two years ago and it has taken me places far beyond the borders of Croatia and Hungary, where I went in pursuit of the “Blood Countess,” Elizabeth Bathory.

Why? Because at its heart, The Progeny is about one simple question:

Who are you really?

Who are you when your roles–daughter, son, sister, brother, friend, neighbor, wife, husband, student, job and titles–and your relationships are stripped away? Who are you at your core? When we step out of the history and experiences that we think define us, that make up an identity we believe to be our true selves… who are you? Are we just the sum of those things… or something beyond them all?

The Progeny is also about genius in all its forms–some more obvious than others. Maybe you, like me, have OCD. Or have contended with something unseen by others, in secret, for years. Maybe you’ve struggled with it through your life to the point that it’s interfered in your daily existence. Whether it’s ADD, ADHD, addiction, depression, anxiety, bi-polor disorder, autism, a chronic illness… whatever it is… I believe it informs your particular genius. The thing that causes you to see the world in a way that others can’t. I wrote this book as a reminder that the way you see the world is a gift. You are amazing. You are Progeny. (Use your powers for good, people!)

This book is about and for you. It’s about us and who we are. Because we’re not so different, in the end.

I love you guys. This story is for you.

I discovered you through the first book in The Book of Mortals series. I knew I had discovered an author – much like your co-author in that series! – who sought to use her gifts not just to entertain, but to explore difficult questions and examine life deeply in ways that normal, everyday conversations don’t often allow. Thank you for staying true to your vision of the world and using your particular genius to write books that not only tell a story, but push us to examine ourselves a little more closely! Off to order my copy now!

I’m passing the word around and we’ll definitely read for book club! This book is amazing on so many levels. Maybe the most important is how everyone can relate. Everyone has trouble sometime in their life wondering who they are. It’s a topic that’s been around but your take on it with this story is thought provoking and I loved it! Can wait to see what happens next!

PS – I honestly think this book is going to do really well. It’s very good!

This is why I love this book. My identity has been stripped away over and over again. By chronic illness, crushed dreams, dashed hopes. This book spoke to me on a deep level, and distracted me from the pain of passing a horrible parasite (Earl had to die!). I’m celebrating the release of this book, praying it will touch hearts as it did mine, and impatiently waiting for the sequel! I love you Tosca; I’m thankful for your friendship and the gifts God has given you that you so freely share with others. I so admire you!

Aw. This is really well written.

And the irony of that makes me laugh. Wouldn’t expect anything less.

It’s a daunting subject to think about. Completely uncomfortable at times. I imagine writing it, even more so..

Makes me all the more excited to dive in.
